Motorists must renew their NY HUT permit for the new Series 25 before the end of 2024 to be in compliance with state law.

The current permit, Series 24, will no longer valid after December 31, 2024.

  • The state of New York maintains a policy for heavy vehicles that requires motorists to renew their highway use tax (HUT) permits at the end of every three year period.
  • Upon registration, Series 25 will be valid until Dec. 31, 2027.
  • Consequences of operating with an invalid permit include large fines, legal action or vehicle impoundment.

What is the New York Highway Use Tax?

The New York Highway Use Tax (HUT) Permit is a requirement for carriers who operate heavy use vehicles on New York State highways per the New York State Tax Law, Section 503.

Every motor carrier must obtain this permit to legally operate within the state. The permit must be renewed annually to stay compliant with the law.

Who Needs a HUT Permit?

If you operate a truck, tractor, or other heavy vehicles on New York highways, you are required to obtain a HUT Permit.

HUT Mandated Vehicles
  • Trucks, tractors, or other self-propelled vehicles: with a gross weight of 18,000 pounds+
  • Trailers If the combined gross weight of the trailer and the vehicle pulling it exceeds 18,000 pounds.
  • Special Vehicles oversized, heavy equipment
